FAQ’s

Q: What specific programs are offered at Intellect Learning Center (ILC)?
A:
Standard Programs: Tutoring programs in reading, math, and/or study skills; curriculum is provided by ILC and is aligned with common core standards
School Support Programs: Academic assistance with school work in all major subjects; student is responsible for bringing in all relevant school material
Test Prep (ACT, SAT, HSPT): Individualized test preparation based on the specific strengths and weaknesses of the student

Q: What is the difference between ILC’s Standard Program and ILC’s School Support Program?
A:
Students enrolled in our Standard Program utilize research-based curriculum provided by ILC. Programs are aligned with common core standards and help students develop strong foundational skills. Subjects include reading, math, and/or study skills.
Students enrolled in our School Support Program work directly on school-related content and are responsible for bringing in all relevant school material. Subjects include reading, language arts, math, science, history, foreign language, and other subjects.

Q: Which program is the best fit for my child?
A:
Our Standard Program includes remedial programs (for students who are falling behind) and enrichment programs (for students who excel and need a more challenging academic experience). Students of all levels benefit from our Standard Program; it is geared towards their specific strengths and weaknesses. Many students struggle in school because they lack foundational skills. For those students, we typically recommend our Standard Program. This helps students build a strong knowledge base to learn independently and grasp more challenging concepts. Also, students who excel in school and are looking for enrichment opportunities to advance even further enroll in our Standard Program.

Students who are generally doing well in school but need help with one or two specific subjects in school benefit from our School Support Program. If your child has an understanding of the basics but needs direct school help with literature, essay writing, geometry, algebra, biology, physics, chemistry, Spanish, or another subject, our specialists can help. We work with you to determine the best fit for your child.

Q: What services do you offer?
A:
Assessment Tests: Nationally-recognized evaluations to pinpoint your child’s academic strengths and weaknesses
Academic Coaching: Support that goes beyond tutoring to help students overcome learning barriers and reach their true potential
College Application Assistance: Expert assistance with the college application process including essays, financial aid, and scholarships

Q: Who are your tutors?
A: Most of our tutors hold teaching certificates and work within the local school systems. All of our tutors are college graduates and many have Master’s Degrees. Many of our tutors have endorsements in special education and have experience working with students with ADD/ADHD, dyslexia, autism, and specific math or reading disabilities. We work hard to ensure each student is placed with a teacher that best meets his or her specific needs. Parents are always welcome to meet their child’s tutors and find out more about their specific qualifications. If a parent requests that only a certified teacher works with his or her child, we can guarantee that.

Q: How often will my child attend ILC?
A:
Some of our students attend only one day per week and others attend almost every day.  We recommend students maintain consistent schedules for optimal results, but schedules are made on an individual basis.

Q: Do you meet with teachers in my child’s school?
A:
Yes- this is an optional component of our program and requires written permission.  We value teacher feedback and work hard to ensure that students are connecting what they learn at ILC to the classroom. We meet with teachers at the child’s school or set up phone meetings if they are unable to meet in person. We do not, however, observe your child in the classroom.

Q: How does your ACT Exam Prep Program help students reach their score goals?
A:
We focus on content and strategies specific to your child’s needs- we build on your child’s strengths while focusing on the areas that need improvement. Students take REAL ACT Exams to gain practice and monitor progress.  Many courses available offer just generalized strategies; at ILC, a student works at his or her own pace in a one-to-one or small group setting. Students are provided with a book and customized packets to study with at home. Students work with specialists for each subject area: English, Math, Reading, Science and Writing.
